font friday #4: league gothic

Welcome to our little type lovefest! We’ll be posting some of our favorites on Fridays, along with Lauren Elise Crafted,Steph from Bubblerock and Jenny from Hank + Hunt. For even more type inspiration, check out the Fontophile Files from the Aerialist Press, Font Love over at the Knotty Bride and Tuesday Type on Superswoon.

We’re keeping the free font streak alive (we have a wishlist font for you next week!) today with one from The League of Moveable Type, a revolution of open source fonts. As Kerry pointed out on Superswoon, sometimes with free fonts you get what you pay for… and that might not include apostrophes or question marks. But The League’s lovely fonts are “well-made, free & open-source, @font-face ready fonts”- they said it and we haven’t found any reason to disagree.

One of our favorites is League Gothic, a version of a classic Gothic typeface from 1903. It’s such a strong, clean display face. Besides a recent Save the Date and a birthday invitation, we also laid out our desktop background in League Gothic, featuring a quote we love from Winston Churchill:

Although we might be a little past the “youth” part, we still find these words so so inspiring. It’s all in there in a nutshell: you’re going to make mistakes. Be generous. Be true. Be fierce. If your desktop could use a little Winston inspiration, feel free to download our 1280 x 800 background file (for personal use only). We LOVE looking at these words everyday.

Ooooh!!! Right up my alley. I think if it came down to pretty scripts or a gorgeous simple font… It’s a perfectly designed plain font for me. And free!!! You rock!
